SUBBA CULTCHA REVIEW 8/10
A truly bizarre release, as if Liars got together with Devendra Banhart and took loads of acid to ensure nothing made sense, and then played their instruments backwards, standing on their heads, thinking in tongues.
Brilliant and frightening, St. Just Vigilantes are a confusing heap of sound experiments and delicate melodies, each flitting past each other, weaving shapes to complete the song. Descending on you like a crazed vulture, they mix electronics and instruments together to create something that lies somewhere between pagan folk and skewed pop.
Their peculiar musical trickery and shape shifting devillery sounds like broken mirrors and whale cry. Their kaleidoscopic noise sounds like the result of sorcery and murmured incantations: resulting from nonsense babble ideas, put through a genius machine, to result in tracks like ‘Ritornelle Serenade’ –which sounds like a beautiful medieval lullaby
Their music is impossible and contradictory yet somehow works. Splendid and strange, the CD edition is released in 1000 copies, with UV gloss artwork. Be ready, and open.
